CAPTAINS GO 3-1 AT EAST COUNTY INVITE; PLACE THIRD OVERALL

ROUND 1: CLAIREMONT 15 – MONTE VISTA 4

The Clairemont boys opened up the first round on Friday with division 3 Monte Vista.  Our Caps wasted no time, sailing out to a 6-0 lead and never looking back!  After opening up a big lead, Clairemont was able to rely on some depth pieces to soak up minutes over the final 3 quarters of the match.  Sophomore Milo Friend had an outstanding performance dropping a first career varsity hat trick.  Senior Luis Pereya put up a season high 2 goals and 3 steals on the day as well!  We also had a few players score their first ever varsity goals including Sophomores Evan Hesseltine, Gabe Canellas-Ricky and Jack Curtis!

QUARTER FINAL: CLAIREMONT 11 – SANTA FE CHRISTIAN 8

The Clairemont boys faced the #1 ranked team in division 3 in the next round.  The match was close in the first quarter with the boys only up 3-1, but the Captains were on the hunt all quarter having barely missed on several opportunities to go up bigger.  But the Clairemont boys didn’t miss those chances in the second quarter as they used an 8-0 run to go up 11-1 and put the game to bed.  Freshmen Ryder Sagastume torched the Golden Eagles for 6 goals and Junior Graham West deposited 3 over this stretch.  The depth pieces subbed back in for the second half of this one, gaining valuable experience as the future of the program against a varsity opponent.

SEMI FINAL: STEELE CANYON 8 – CLAIREMONT 5

Tough match for the Caps in the semi final Saturday.  After an excellent 2-0 start, the offense struggled to produce and the lead slipped away.  Clairemont’s defense was stout, holding Steele to only 8 goals, but those efforts weren’t enough in the end.

3rd PLACE GAME: CLAIREMONT 10 – EL CAPITAN 8

For the sixth time in two seasons Clairemont and El Cap took the pool against one another, the fifth of which has been played in Lakeside.  When two teams are this familiar, anything can happen.  And the Vaqueros wanted this one BAD!  They had a hot start against our Captains in the first, storming out to a 4-1 lead.  The Clairemont boys kept their poise though, and rallied back with a 4-0 second quarter.  Juniors Shawn Spears, Ryan Fegan, and Graham West keyed the 2nd quarter fleury with crisp passing and strong finishing from the outside to help Clairemont take a lead into halftime.  Freshmen Ryder Sagatume finally broke free in the third quarter with a pair of goals, but every time El Cap was able to immediately answer back to stay within 1.  It wasn’t until man of the match sophomore Charlie Gipson stepped up for this team and scored the final three goals to win the game for Clairemont.  Hard fought game, but all that matters in the end was we got the win!
