CAPTAINS PUT THE CLAMPS DOWN ON FALCONS
CAPTAINS SHUT DOWN SCRIPPS; PARKER GIFTS A LIFE LINE
CLAIREMONT 17 – SCRIPPS RANCH 5
As we enter the final three weeks of season, the Clairemont Boy’s Water Polo team finds themselves on the bubble of making the playoffs once again. But one pathway exists that will guarantee their spot in the post-season: a league title. When the day started, Clairemont did not control their own fate to win the league: even if they won out, they’d need some help. Francis Parker gifted Clairemont that life line Wednesday evening by taking down La Jolla Country Day 14-10. Now, the pathway to the playoffs is in their own hands: win the final 3 league games.
The boys understood the mission and executed the game plan to perfection in a defensive masterclass against the Scripps Ranch Falcons. Senior Preston Coleman got the Captains off to a good start, blasting in the first goal of the game from the center position. The Falcons answered back, but the Caps responded with 3 straight goals to close out the quarter up 4-1. Scripps Ranch hung around for a bit longer, scoring the first goal of the 2nd quarter to pull within 2, but a massive 7 goal run to close out the half put the game away for good. Junior Sebastien Fitzgerald spurred the offensive onslaught with a counter attack goal midway through the second quarter, and Freshmen Ryder Sagastume logged 3 of his 7 on the night over this stretch. Juniors Graham West, Corbin Giles, Shawn Spears, and Sophomore Charlie Gipson all contributed goals to the first half run as well. The Captains slowed down the tempo in the second half, but never let up on defense as the boys cruised to an important 17-5 victory. It was an all around great team effort and exactly the kind of result the boys needed to build momentum on going into the final two league games.
